Teaser Trailer - PSYCHO

Image
Analysis: I overlayed the sound from the famous  clip  of the shower scene onto an intense moment from the film where the woman is driving away. I retained the original idea of introducing this character as the main character despite her being present only at the beginning of the film. I also used the drum beats, accompanying them with the zoom into the woman's eyes. This use of the shower sounds and the drive is very disorientating and doesn't reveal any narrative, only the genre. My use of the black screen causes the audience to be in the dark about what is happening. The voiceover suggests a sinister aspect to the film, developing the thriller genre, and almost directly addressing the audience. I then included the death of the woman, using the intense look on her eyes as a link between the two shots. The soundscape again disorientates the audience which will then make them want to see the film. I also used the jump cuts to her ...

Theatrical Trailer - PSYCHO

Image
This is my theatrical trailer for Psycho. I chose to use the famous music at the beginning, to add suspense and show that the place where the car is driving to. Also i used the sign to reiterate the fact that the motel is a dangerous place, with the misleading inviting sign saying 'vacancy'. I used the names of the key people involved because, for example Alfred Hitchcock was famous, so knowing it was one of his films may widen the audience. I used the sound against a black screen to reiterate the idea of isolation and set up the fact that Janet Leigh's character is the victim. I wanted to use the clips from the original trailer which consisted of Alfred Hitchcock touring the set of the film as there are some key lines such as the one I included which adds a suspense to the film, really highlighting the horror/thriller genre. In the following shots, i try to not include both of the perceived main characters because this adds tension as o who is talking in the voiceover....

Teaser 9 - 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: black screen text over black screen indicating narrative slashing of screen with light behind shot of chainsaw Analysis: The text at the beginning of this trailer clearly indicates the  narrative  with the type font indicating the genre and adding mystery to the next events. The text in this clip also provides mystery in the use of ellipses and therefore makes the audience be more on edge. The sound is key in this clip as most of the screen is black and therefore the sound sets up the storyline and the narrative. The opening of the woman screaming and the lack of image which makes the audience full of suspense and this mystery makes the audience empathise with the character, placing them in an almost POV shot as they feel they are in the dark. This also taps into the common fear of the darkness which shows the genre conventions being used. The fact the sound is only diegetic makes the clip more naturalistic and realistic m...

Teaser 8 - 'Masterminds'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: CCTV recordings high angle shot of girl on floor long shot of both characters off to the right close up of speeding wheel follow shot of walking  birds-eye of money falling Analysis: The opening shots subvert the  conventions  of a teaser as it hints to a more crime mystery drama as it is like a documentary shown through use of CCTV footage. The news reporter's voice also helps to indicate the implied seriousness of the film. The distortion is also a signifier of thriller or crime mystery. The juxtaposition this shot with the brighter coloured and brighter lighting of the 2 characters shows a clear change on genre. The suspenseful music that builds to the point where the gunshot noise is heard, and the sudden stopping of this sound, enhances the comedy and infers the change in genre.

Teaser 7 - 'Love, Rosie'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: mirror camera angle shot frequent close ups to show  emotions  of characters handheld shot reverse shot long shots - running birds eye view on the  Analysis: This clip uses the frequent shot changes coupled with the music to create mystery and suspense in what the film is portraying. The notion of genre is very clear here however the narrative is more unclear and therefore intrigues the audiences. The music is bright and used specifically in moments of comedy as it cuts out at the point of comedy dialogue. There is no voiceover and therefore conforms to the conventions of the teaser trailer. The colouration is bright and links well with the happier bright music. The handheld camera at moments does make the trailer more intimate and helps the audience to connect with the characters. The close ups also achieves this. the layered dialogue helps to connect the scenes and make the trailer more interesting.

Teaser 6 - 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: Arial establishing drone shot of setting close ups of death hands grabbing sailors long shot through fire all the shots that don't reveal the character's face overhead birds-eye view, zooms out shot reverse shot with characters Analysis: This  trailer  also uses not much narrative and explores the genre more widely, giving a sense of what the film is like, through the orchestral stabs and ebb and flow in dynamics adding suspense and tension to the scene. This combined with frequent almost rhythmic sound effects of the swords or the footsteps adds an eeriness and sense of mystery to the trailer. The main notion of mystery created here is through the lack of the introduction of characters as the man walking around is always in shots that do not reveal his face. This creates suspense, mystery and curiosity which helps to attract audiences. The movement of the camera as it follows this character, creates...

Teaser 5 - 'Home Again'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: Frequent use of mid shots mid shots using proxemics of actors such as the man behind 'Alice' and over the shoulder shots long shot of lying on bench, cut in to mid shot establishing shot of party scene, drone style shot reverse shot extreme close up of lips Analysis: this trailer has a balanced mix of narrative and genre, conveyed mainly through the diegetic dialogue but also through the brighter upbeat music that accompanies the shots. The colouration is bright with a lighter saturation, showing the clear rom com genre. This genre is also hinted at through the many intimate scenes such as the shot of the extreme close up of the lips in the final shot. This adds intimacy and mystery to who the lips belong to and also draws the audience in through curiosity, by providing a notion of mystery. The frequent use of different proxemics such as placing 'Alice' in front of the changing man, facing the screen adds comedy whilst the over the sho...

Teaser 4 - 'Wonder Woman'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: close up slow motion of movement of bullet low angle  allow  shot as she rises long shot when she ricochets the attack low angle long shots, slow motion of walking and her movement close ups in action Analysis: This teaser is very fast paced as all the shots contain fast  movement  or a fast movement in slow motion. The use of slow motion provides curiosity as the viewer is intrigued but the varying shot durations and is also unexpected and unpredicted placement of the slow motion editing. The shorter shot duration combined with the frequent shot changes adds mystery and chaos to the viewers emotions. The various non naturalistic shots of the mid air shots also creates mystery and wonder towards the narrative. This trailer clearly states the genre of the film and much less of the narrative. The frequent close ups provides intimacy and empathy towards the characters again reinforcing the curiosity of...

Teaser 3 - 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: worms eye  view  of buildings follow shot on motorbike over the shoulder mid shot to zoom in hospital bed worms eye follow shot close up of exercise - handheld close up of man with make with side lighting Analysis: This trailer has a wide range of shots, which indicate more of the genre rather than the  narrative . The fast pace is indicated by the faster thicker textured music which is synthesised making the fear and sense of danger more prominent. The juxtaposition of the calmer shot in the hospital to the rest provides a sense of mystery. A key shot is the worms eye view of the buildings which form the shape of the batman symbol, this style if shot makes the scene more intimidating and therefore intriguing for the audience. The style of shot also intimates the audience into curiosity as it suggests a superiority but also a chaos and collapse. The short cuts of fast paced action allowed a constant sense of pace and move...

Teaser 2 - 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: establishing shot of sand follow shot of droid zoomed close up of the girls face follow shot of the hooded man walking into woods arial circular ar shot of ship going to battle (through to upside down shot) Analysis: The music is a key aspect of any  trailer  and in this one, it creates intrigue in the sense that it opens as a  dissonant chromatic chord played almost uncomfortably high on strings, which conventionally suggests danger or tension to the scene. Opening with this fading in along with the slow fade of the establishing shot, implies that the audience will have to wait and the scene will develop unexpectedly, in duration and in narrative. The voice-over contrasts with the pitch of the chord as it is deeper in tone and more intimate volume, this draws the audience in. The words used also invite the audience and achieve this in the direction address to them, using pronouns such as you whic...

Teaser 1 - 'Beauty and The Beast'

Image
Trailer: Key Shots: castle establishing shot arial indoor time-lapse shot close up of painting - slash of painting zooming pan of the rose refocus of Belle's entrance Analysis: This teaser trailer uses the arial shots frequently, showing the grandness of the house and therefore highlighting the fairytale style and clearly establishing setting. These arial shots are also time lapses which sets up the narrative to the setting by showing the gradual depreciation in quality of the house. This teaser conforms with the stereotypical teaser elements as it its within the 1 min 30 second recognised time limit. and with these arial shots accompanied by the fairly ambiguous non diegetic music, the whole trailer creates an air of mystery. The lack of characters also causes the audience to question this and therefore creates intrigue. This time lapse aids the idea of suspense as the change in the mise-en-scene causes the audience to question and shows the film is mysterious. The...
