Teaser 1 - 'Beauty and The Beast'

Trailer:

Key Shots:

  • castle establishing shot
  • arial indoor time-lapse shot
  • close up of painting - slash of painting
  • zooming pan of the rose
  • refocus of Belle's entrance

Analysis:

This teaser trailer uses the arial shots frequently, showing the grandness of the house and therefore highlighting the fairytale style and clearly establishing setting. These arial shots are also time lapses which sets up the narrative to the setting by showing the gradual depreciation in quality of the house. This teaser conforms with the stereotypical teaser elements as it its within the 1 min 30 second recognised time limit. and with these arial shots accompanied by the fairly ambiguous non diegetic music, the whole trailer creates an air of mystery. The lack of characters also causes the audience to question this and therefore creates intrigue. This time lapse aids the idea of suspense as the change in the mise-en-scene causes the audience to question and shows the film is mysterious. The cut in to the face also is the first introduction of an character and this causes intrigue, especially at the slash because the music although appearing mysterious and slightly romantic, the slash of the claw does suggest a more sinister feel, subverting the typical conventions of genre. This shot also changes the pace as the fast slash cuts tot a fast cut to a black screen, accompanied by a diegetic growl. The mystery is then enhanced with the frequent black screens accompanied by the voiceover, which introduces 3 characters without even seeing them on screen. The only character that is introduced is in the end with the girl reaching out to touch the rose accompanied by the famous and romantic tune which leaves the audience questioning. The use of the words 'Be Our Guest' is not only a direct reference and clue to the film but is also a invitation to the audience and therefore causes the audience to want to see the film.
