Reflective Research
How would I make the film opening more pertinent to the world we live in.
I would make the girl look more vulnerable to hint more towards the horror genre and also to question the innocence of the girl and i would achieve this by making the camera handheld to add to the idea that someone else was in the room and there was a threat for this to then be subverted by the idea that the person watching was a small child. To really climax the clip i would make the climax be at the point that you see the little girl's face rather than starting with the clip of the feet as this dulled down the comedy of the reveal.
I would make the girl in the bath more violated as i would show more clips of her in the bath in a way that was more suggestive to show the stereotype of the girl who is the victim of the killer or of the genre, to then be subverted in the idea that she could be the killer. I would also show clips of for example her legs and close ups of the girl in the bath, such as her hair and really hone in on the girl in the bath and her vulnerability, enhanced by the idea of someone watching her, and this would conform the teenager in the bath to the seductress stereotype of an antagonist. I want the audience to feel sorry for the girl until the point where they see the blood on the bath and realise who the girl is the antagonist.
i would enhance the use the little girl in a more menacing way throughout, having very quick shots of her moving out of shot and hinting at another presence in the room. this would conform more to the horror thriller genre and would also set up the comedy later on to show how she was really no threat at all.
Throughout the show and the integrated credits i would change the font of the credits so as to make it more menacing and therefore make the idea of the parody more prominent, as the conventions would be conformed to making the subversion at the end more comedic and therefore, causing the audience to realise they should not assume about the characters.
Evidence
This shot shows a sense of power which contradicts many stereotypes of female teenagers that they are weaker and have no control, as she is sitting with a strong position of her arms and her head back which shows a sense of control and power. This position of being in the bath is contrasting as the idea of the bath is a vulnerable state for the girl. This shot therefore questions the stereotypes as it is a contradictory stance as even in her weakest state this antagonist is strong.
This subverts the audience's idea of the girl in the bath as she is now shown as being the antagonist instead of the weak victim which also subverts genre conventions as the female is usually the victim and this then makes the audience wary of what they are watching. The blood however is a convention of the thriller horror genre. The blood is also not a big clue as to what has happened as its is very vague but suggests violence from this seemingly vulnerable antagonist.
This shot shows the girl's vulnerability as she is underwater so her senses are dulled and therefore shows her lack of worry over her position showing her as a more scary antagonist. The peacefulness of her expression enhances this as well. The long hair also highlights her gender and again reiterates the idea that the antagonist is uncommonly female.
This shot conforms to the genre and the idea that someone is watching the girl in the bath, highlighting her vulnerability. The refocussing conforms to the genre and adds the idea of the threat, making the audience assume that the film is in danger, adding to the comedy as the threat is a 3 year old girl, which also subverts the ideas of the genre and therefore tells the audience not to assume the representation will be correct
This shot shows that the antagonist might have some deeper rooted issues as the idea of sadistically writing out a name on the mirror in blood would make the audience believe that the sympathy they feel for the girl is misplaced but the comedic parody reveal at the end shows that it is irrelevant and also done in ketchup. This again subverts the common stereotype that the female is the victim or the princess.
The opening of the door suggests the increase in threat as there is a very real person or thing that is intruding on this girl and her vulnerable state is now threatened. this leads the audience to place sympathy with the girl and also be highly intrigued by the mystery of the person that is about to enter, and also the ambiguity of what they are about to do to the girl.
This shot allows the audience to placater sympathy with the girl, and her sitting up allows the audience heighten their senses with the girl's as she can now see and hear the person entering. This shot also suggests suspicion and therefore leads to the ambiguous placement of the audiences' sympathy and emotional connection. This shot conforms to the stereotype of the victim, which confuses the audiences emotions because this girl is the antagonist.
This shot reveals the parody theme of the film. This completely subverts the genre, making the assumptions made by the audience to be wrong and irrelevant due to the conforming of the horror conventions.
